About Me
Communication changes following a brain injury, stroke or other neurological condition can affect so much more than conversation. It can change how you see yourself, your relationships, your work and your confidence.
I'm Emma Derbyshire, a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist with extensive experience supporting adults following traumatic and acquired brain injury, stroke and other neurological conditions across the NHS, specialist rehabilitation services and independent practice.
I believe therapy is about so much more than communication. It's about understanding who you are, what matters to you, and working together to find practical ways to communicate with confidence, rediscover your identity and move forward with purpose.
Every person I work with has a different story, so there is no one-size-fits-all approach. I take time to listen, understand your goals and tailor therapy around your everyday life. Whether that's returning to work, rebuilding relationships, taking part in conversations or simply feeling more like yourself again, we'll work together to find strategies that genuinely make a difference.
Whether you're looking for support for yourself, someone you care about, or you're a case manager seeking specialist neurological rehabilitation, my aim is to help people communicate authentically, rediscover their confidence and move forward with purpose, at their own pace.
"I had significant post accident difficulties with speech, cognition and written work. Emma has helped me significantly in all of these areas, which has a knock-on effect to mood and confidence. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to anyone with similar difficulties. Thank you Emma!"

What To Expect
1. Let's Chat
I offer a free 30-minute online consultation to find out a little more about you, your situation and what you're hoping to achieve. It's also an opportunity for you to ask questions, understand how I work and decide whether I'm the right therapist for you.
2. Getting Started
If you decide to go ahead, I'll send you a few documents to complete before we meet, including consent forms and some background information. This helps me understand your circumstances and means we can make the most of our time together from the very beginning.
3. Assessment
Assessment can take place online or in person and is tailored to your individual needs. We'll explore your strengths alongside the communication or swallowing changes you've experienced, as well as discussing your goals and the situations that matter most to you.
4. Therapy
Following your assessment, we'll agree on a therapy plan together. Some people benefit from a focused block of therapy, while others prefer ongoing support. Every programme is tailored to your goals, with flexibility to adapt as your needs change.
5. Reviewing Progress
We'll regularly review how things are going, celebrate the progress you've made and talk about any new challenges or goals that arise along the way. Therapy should evolve with you, so we'll continue adapting our approach to make sure it remains meaningful and relevant to your everyday life.
